Barkly Tablelands District
This region covers about 30,000 square miles (about 77732.8 sq km) extending from Newcastle Waters to the Queensland border. The average annual rainfall (1955 Commonwealth Annual Report) varies from 11.66 inches at Lake Nash to 17.79 inches (about 29cm to 45 cm) to at Newcastle Waters. The rain mainly occurs between November and March. The climate is hot in the summer with temperatures frequently over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (about 37 degrees Celsius) but is fresh and bracing during the winter. There are a few good permanent natural waterholes but the area generally is not well served in natural waters,
Abundant sub-artesian water of good quality is found .however in almost all of the area, usually at a depth of 150 to 300 feet (about 45m to 90m). The elevation ranges from 600 to 1,000 feet (about 180m to 300m) and the area consists of Mitchell and Flinders grass downs broken by small stretches of mixed country affording some shade. The whole area tends to be flat, featureless and lacking in shade.
